PHILOSOPHY

Neurosurgery has a higher barrier of access for medical students due to its highly specialized nature. Medical universities struggle to give young residents and medical students time and resources necessary to gain early experience in the field of neurosurgery especially if the student is training in a low-or-middle-income country. The burden to seek out neurosurgical experience and knowledge has been placed on medical students. This burden can be alleviated through the utilization of technology.

The Center for Innovation, Research and Education provides cutting-edge virtual and physical training opportunities that were developed by experienced neurosurgeons with the goal to be incorporated into neurosurgical residency curriculum as well as increasing student access to neurosurgical education. Our main goal is to provide students and future neurosurgeons an opportunity to develop their surgical skills more precisely and faster than ever before. Latest Virtual and Augmented Reality technologies are already revolutionizing the way we are planning and implementing surgical procedures. In our mixed reality labs, our team is able to reconstruct patient specific data within a matter of seconds and transfer it into our Virtual Reality software, developed for training and planning microneurosurgical operations. In our fully equipped microsurgical phantom laboratories, even the most complex and challenging neurosurgical interventions can then be prepared, simulated and performed as realistically as possible using real microsurgical instruments and equipment.
